Sydney baseball opens up 2012 with a win over Ferrum

 Lynchburg, Va. -

Hampden-Sydney baseball kicked off their 2012 campaign yesterday with a 5-3 win over Ferrum College at Ty Cobb Ballpark.

Junior righty Dan Nicoll picked up the victory pitching six scoreless innings with five k’s and just one walk.

The Tigers struck again in the bottom of the seventh as Hamlett roped a single to score Tucker. Ferrum responded in the top of the eighth with three runs of their own as Wes Walker hit a single to bat in two runs, and a third scored on the play on a throwing error.

Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers added to their cushion as Patrick Kuhns and Erick Herrmann led off with back-to-back doubles, with a sacrifice fly from Flinchum scoring Kuhns.

Nick Caporale closed out the game for Sydney only allowing one hit as he picked up his first save of the season.

Ferrum’s Chris Walker picked up the loss after allowing four runs, three earned in six and two thirds innings.
