Lynchburg College men’s basketball opened up the New Year yesterday with a 108 – 80 defeat at the hands of Old Dominion Athletic Conference powerhouse Virginia Wesleyan. Wesleyan is one of two teams that have yet to be defeated in conference play and is currently ranked #2 in the nation.

The Hornets started out strong against the Marlins as a Michael Wims three pointer and a jumper from Austin Chillemi put Lynchburg ahead 17 – 16 seven minutes into the contest. Then Wesleyan’s D.J. Woodmore, who scored a game high 35 points, answered back with a quick three pointer to give the Marlins the two point lead. Wesleyan never looked back as they lead the rest of the game cruising to a 108 – 80 victory.

Harry West Jr. came off the bench for the Hornets and scored a team high 17 points going 5 – 7 from the field in just 18 minutes of play. Nate Campbell, Austin Chillemi and Tucker Lucas all finished in double figures as for Lynchburg who moved to 2 – 2 in the ODAC and 7 – 5 on the season.

The Hornets have a few days off before hosting Bridgewater College this Wednesday in another ODAC match up. The Eagles are currently 1 – 1 in conference play with a win against Guilford and a loss to Randolph. Last season, the two teams split their regular season contests with each side winning on their home court. Wednesday’s tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm in Turner Gymnasium.
