E.C. Glass boys’ varsity lacrosse wins second consecutive District Championship

E.C. Glass High SchoolLynchburg, Va. -

Although the name of the district changed this off-season, the Champion did not.

E.C. Glass boys’ varsity lacrosse knocked off #1 seeded Patrick Henry on the road yesterday, 10 – 7, to earn the inaugural Virginia West District Championship. Glass brought home the Jefferson District Championship last spring for their first district title under Head Coach Eddie Ranuska.

In last night’s game, Sam Craighill and Hunt McCarthy put the Hilltoppers up early, but consecutive goals from Patrick Henry in the final sixty seconds of the first quarter knotted the game at two. The Patriots carried that momentum over into the second quarter finding the back of the net early to take a 3 – 2 lead.

Unfortunately for Patrick Henry, that would be their only lead of the game, as two more goals from Craighill and goals from Robbie Bryant and Tre Rose gave Glass a 6 – 3 lead heading into the half.

The Patriots came out sizzling in the second half with back-to-back goals, but the Hilltoppers defense were able to settle down and regain control of the game. After big stops on the defensive end, Daniel Kosowski, Matt Riordan and Colin Montgomery all scored in less than two minutes to extend the Glass lead to four goals. The Patriots were able to tally one more before the end of the third cutting the Hilltopper lead to three.

Glass came out all business in the fourth as Riordan found the back of the net early to extend the lead back to four. Patrick Henry was able to squeak out another goal, but there would be no comeback, as Glass earned their second consecutive District Championship.

Craighill finished with a hat trick while Riordan had an all-around effort tallying two goals and two assists. Jimbo Moore also recorded two assists while Brian Davies racked up 12 saves between the pipes.

Glass (12 – 3), who moved up to #3 in the region and #9 in the state with the “W”,  now hits the road for Richmond this Tuesday for a contest with #8 Douglas Freeman (11 – 5). Although the two teams have not faced off this season, they had a common opponent in Albemarle. Freeman knocked them off, 6 – 5, way back on March 28 while Glass beat them, 10 – 7, just seven days ago.

Glass boys’ varsity lacrosse travels to Patrick Henry for Virginia West Championship

E.C. Glass High SchoolLynchburg, Va. -

#5 in the region, E.C. Glass varsity lacrosse travels to Patrick Henry this evening to play in the Virginia West Championship.  It is Glass’ second consecutive trip to a district championship after winning the Jefferson District in 2011.

Not only did the boys outscore Salem High School in Tuesday night’s semifinal, the Hilltoppers also outplayed the Spartans in route to an 8 – 5 victory.  Glass outscored Salem in all but one quarter and controlled the momentum throughout a majority of the game.

The Spartans jumped on the board early, but back-to-back goals from Jimbo Moore and Robbie Bryant gave Glass a 2 – 1 lead. Moore would find the back of the net once more before the end of the quarter as Glass headed into the second up 3 – 1.

After Salem made it a one goal game with less than eleven minutes to play in the second, Sam Craighill and Tre Rose each tallied a goal in a time span of two minutes to increase the lead to three.  The Spartans were able to answer back with just over two minutes to play before the break, but on the ensuing possession, a huge save from Brian Davies in net, lead to another Bryant goal as Glass headed into the half up 6 – 3.

The Hilltoppers shot out of the gates in the second half and extended their lead to 8 – 3 behind goal’s from Moore and Colin Montgomery.  Salem was able to tack on two more goals before the end of the game, but Davies and the Glass defense crushed any hopes of a comeback victory for their rival, defeating the Spartans for the fifth time in their last six meetings.

Davies finished with eleven saves on the evening, while the offense was led by Moore and Bryant.  Moore finished with a hat trick while Bryant registered two goals and an assist.

Davies, and the defense anchored by senior captain Joe Vincent, will be vital to the Hilltoppers success in tonight’s Championship game.  Glass split the regular season series with PH with both programs winning on the road.

Tonight’s contest is slated for 7:30 pm.

Liberty men’s lacrosse officially on the map after 2012 season

Official Logo of the Liberty FlamesLynchburg, Va. -

Although their season came to an end in the semifinals of the Division II Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Tournament, the Liberty University men’s lacrosse team had quite the successful season.

Liberty, who upset top seeded Coastal Carolina in the Tournament before falling to eventual Champion Elon University, had a tremendous amount of success in 2012 with a roster made up primarily of freshman, sophomores and juniors.

Sophomore Attack Kurt Tobias led the SELC in goals (37) and points (56) while fellow sophomore, Daniel Forbes, was not far behind with 39 points on 27 goals. Freshman midfielder Will Perkins also had a solid year finding the back of the net 25 times, more than any other freshman in the SELC.

Liberty also garnered many postseason awards.

Head Coach Kyle McQuillan was selected as Conference Coach of the Year while Tobias was selected to 1st team All-Conference attack. Perkins was named to 1st team midfield alongside sophomore Nate Lowmaster who made 1st team Defense and sophomore Travis Briggs, 1st team Long stick midfielder. Senior Mike Zumpano made 2nd team defense while sophomore Derek Haywood and senior Jarrett Chambers received honorable mention.

McQuillan is proud of his programs season and although they did not achieve their goal of a conference championship, they can be proud of the reputation they have established going forward.

“This past season was great, and I am really proud of what we were able to accomplish.” McQuillan said in an email. “We took some very big steps this past year, and I think we went a long way in putting Liberty Lacrosse on the map”

The Flames (8 – 4 / 3 – 1) were a championship contender in the conference in just their second year and look to be one of the favorites in the highly competitive SELC heading into next season.

Coach McQuillan could return up to 24 players from this year’s roster, bolstering the potential for even more success in 2013.

“This program is growing so rapidly that it is not out of the question to expect a SELC championship next season and to make our first ever appearance at nationals.” McQuillan added. “Again, not to take anything away from our guys and what they accomplished this season, but the bar is set very high for Liberty Lacrosse and everyone embraces that.”

#3 Lynchburg men’s lacrosse wins ODAC Championship, earns first round bye in NCAA Tournament

Lynchburg Mascot LogoLynchburg, Va. -

The Lynchburg College men’s lacrosse team knocked off Washington and Lee Sunday afternoon to win the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship.

The Hornets controlled the game early on tallying the first ten shots. The Generals, backed by a boisterous crowd that made the trip from Lexington, made their first shot of the day count, as Garrett Paglia scored an unassisted goal with just over seven minutes to play in the first.

Mac Means extended the Gennies lead towards the end of the quarter giving the road team a two goal lead heading into the second.

The start of the second was as competitive as the first before Pat Ohrem woke up the crowd with less than nine minutes to play on an assist from Andrew Wilfong.

Then with 37 seconds remaining before the break, the momentum completely shifted towards Lynchburg’s favor as Vin Curran scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at two. After winning the next face-off, Lynchburg nearly scored another goal before ODAC Coach of the Year, Steve Koudelka, called a time out with 28 ticks remaining.

On the ensuing play, Wilfong grabbed his second assist of the day on a Max Voumard goal with 15 seconds remaining in the half as Lynchburg went in up 3 – 2.

The Hornets wasted no time in the second half as Wilfong found the back of the net unassisted just a minute and a half in. Two minutes later, Ohrem would tally his second goal on the day to extend the lead to 5 – 2 before the Generals Scott Meehan cut the deficit back to two.

That would be as close as it got for the Generals, as Matt Manzo answered back just over a minute later to push the lead back to three heading into the final quarter. Wilfong and Manzo tallied back to back goals to open the fourth extending the lead to 8 – 3 knocking the wind out of the Cinderella team of the tournament. Jack Reuter would add one more for W&L before goals from Ohrem and Derek Sweet clinched the 10 – 4 victory.

Ohrem finished with three goals while Wilfong and Manzo had two. It was Lynchburg’s fourth overall title and first since 2008.

Goalie Franc Cook and ODAC Player of the Year, Joe Lisicky, anchored the defense that only allowed 14 shots all day. Cook finished with 10 saves on the day while Lisicky picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Perhaps the best news of the day came late Sunday evening when the Hornets, who are currently ranked #3 in the nation, earned one of four first round byes in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Lynchburg will play the winner of Wednesday’s game between Adrian and Denison next weekend.

Lynchburg (17 – 1 / 7 – 0) is the top seed in their region which includes Birmingham Southern, Stevenson, Gettysburg and Ohio Wesleyan. Lynchburg has defeated Birmingham Southern and Stevenson already this season.

Lady Colonels take sole possession of first place in Dogwood District

Lynchburg, Va. -

In just their first year as a varsity program, the Altavista girls’ varsity soccer team is already turning Dogwood District heads as they moved to 5 – 0 in district play yesterday with a 4 – 2 win over Appomattox High School.

The Lady Colonels, who took sole possession of first place with the win, were led by a Madeline McCracken hat trick. McCracken has now scored 23 goals this season in just ten games. Chelsea Robinson was the other goal scorer for Altavista who won three district games in four days this week.

The Lady Colonels (7 – 2 – 1 / 5 – 0) have three Dogwood District games remaining this season against Dan River, Appomattox and Nelson County. The contest against Appomattox, which is the only remaining road game for Altavista, will play a direct role in determining the regular season district champ making it quite a compelling match up come May 15.

Altavista’s next game is not until next Friday, May 11, when they host Dan River at 5 pm. The Lady Colonels made quick work of Dan River in their only contest this season back on April 23 with a 4 – 0 shutout.

Glass boys’ varsity lacrosse hosts Patrick Henry with regular season district title on the line

E.C. Glass High SchoolLynchburg Va. -

When E.C. Glass boys’ varsity lacrosse takes the field against Patrick Henry this evening, the Western District regular season title will be up for grabs.

Glass (10 – 1 / 6 – 0) ended Patrick Henry’s run at a perfect season last Saturday on the road. Senior goalie Brian Davies registered 15 saves on the day as Glass earned a hard fought victory, 4 – 2. Sam Craighill led the way for the Hilltoppers with two goals while Matt Riordan and Jimbo Moore each found the back of the net once.

Heading into this evening’s showdown, Glass is ranked #3 in the region and #8 in the state, according to laxpower.com. Glass has played consistently well on both sides of the ball averaging 13.27 goals a game while only allowing 3.27, good enough for sixth and first place in the region respectively in those categories.

Patrick Henry, who is ranked #6 in the region, bounced back with a midweek win over Rockbridge County and would love nothing more than to get even and claim the regular season title. Then again, it is a lot easier said than done against a Hilltoppers squad that has not allowed an opponent to score over eight goals all season and have outscored them 146 – 36 in the process.

Are you kidding me? 146 – 36. I am no math major, but that looks like a 110 goal advantage on the season. Winners of their last six, Glass and Head Coach Eddie Ranuska are as potent as ever gearing up for what looks to be another thrilling postseason run.

Lynchburg baseball wins ODAC Championship for first time since ’90

Lynchburg Mascot LogoLynchburg, Va. -

Senior pitcher Robert Garrett tossed his second complete game in four days Sunday afternoon as Lynchburg College defeated Bridgewater College, 2 – 1, capturing their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Championship since 1990.

Garrett, one of three seniors on the squad, only allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out five. In 18 innings of work during the tournament, Garrett walked just two batters, allowed only two runs and picked up two wins.

While Garrett was getting it done on the mound, shortstop Michael Kenah was getting it done at the plate knocking in Ashton Paige twice for the Hornets two runs on the day.

Lynchburg, whose record improved to 34 – 8 on the season, is known for their explosive offense, but this weekend was all about pitching. The Hornets only needed four pitchers to bring home the title as Garrett, Brandon Miller, James Womack and Jared Millner allowed just three earned runs in 36 innings, quite a dominating weekend.

Millner and left fielder Richard Palase are the other two seniors on the team along with Garrett.

Lynchburg, who is ranked #20 in the nation, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the win but will not know their opponent till mid-May. It was the Hornets eighth ODAC Championship overall, second to only Bridgewater, who has 13.
